What a 6-Week Burnout Recovery Program Actually Looks Like

If you’re searching for a burnout recovery program, you’re probably past the advice that didn’t hold. You took the long weekend. You slept more. You came back on Monday feeling exactly the same — and a little more demoralised, because you did the thing you were supposed to do.

This page is the week-by-week. Buy URL is Burnout Reset. Cluster map: complete guide. Free Burnout Audit if you don’t have a location yet.

This is a walkthrough of ours. Not a generic industry standard. Not a composite of “what most programs look like.” Burnout Reset is the 6-week self-guided program we built because rest was not enough. One of us burned out running a company — quiet, still functional, still hitting deadlines. The other was in coaching training. The exercises were tested on us first.

Six weeks is the length of the workbook. It is not a promise that you’ll be done.

Why “I’ll just rest” and “I’ll figure it out myself” stall

The most common objection to a workbook is that you don’t need one. You’ll rest. You’ll journal. You’ll figure it out when things slow down.

Things don’t slow down. And burnout makes “figuring it out yourself” specifically hard.

The WHO describes burnout as three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism (that mental distance from your work), and reduced professional efficacy. Rest addresses the first one. It does not touch the other two, and it does not change the conditions that produced the depletion. We wrote about this at length in Why Rest Doesn’t Fix Burnout. A week off is a pause. It is not recovery.

The other reason structure matters: burnout impairs the cognitive functions you need to self-direct recovery. When you’re depleted, identifying what you need, making a plan, and executing it consistently are all harder than they normally would be. The structure does the sequencing that depletion makes difficult.

What recovery actually requires — beyond rest — is in Burnout Recovery: What It Actually Takes.

Six weeks of structure is not a six-week cure

Honest timeline, because anything faster would be a sales line.

Stage 1–2 burnout, caught early, can be addressed in 4–8 weeks with structured work. Stage 3–4 that’s been building for months typically takes 3–6 months of deliberate recovery — and often a significant environmental change as well. We do not know a version of this that is faster.

So why six weeks? Because that is the arc of the work: understand the pattern, map the energy, recover the values, rebuild the physical layer, interrupt the thinking, and put a plan and an early-warning system in place. For some people, that arc is the bulk of recovery. For others, it is the start of a longer rebuild. The program is the structure. It is not a finish line.

I needed the structure more than I wanted to admit it. I was still answering emails. Still running the company. Still looking fine. Rest didn’t fail because I hadn’t rested hard enough. It failed because I was asking a pause to do a job only a sequence could do.

Inside this 6-week burnout recovery program

Same frameworks a certified life coach would walk you through. Priced so people who can’t do $400/hour still get the structure. 42 pages. Self-guided. You do the work; we did the sequencing.

Week 1 — Understanding your burnout

You cannot recover from a fog. Week 1 is diagnostic, not motivational.

You work the Burnout Cycle model — how this built, not just how it feels this week. You do a personal assessment across the three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism, reduced efficacy. You map where it actually came from. Values misalignment, missing boundaries, an unsustainable environment, and perfectionism do not respond to the same first step. Most burnout content treats everyone the same. Week 1 does not.

From the outside I was still functional. From the inside I could not tell whether I was tired, bored, or actually burned out. Naming the pattern was the first useful thing that happened.

Week 2 — Mapping your energy

Once you know the pattern, you need to see where your energy actually goes — and where it doesn’t.

The Wellness Wheel across 8 life domains. An Energy Audit. The physical signals most people have been ignoring: sleep that doesn’t restore, the Sunday dread, the irritability that arrived so slowly it started to feel like personality.

Burnout is not only a work problem. It shows up in the body and in the parts of life you stopped feeding. Week 2 makes that visible so Week 3 and Week 4 aren’t guesswork.

Pause here if you don’t know your starting point. The free Burnout Audit takes 3 minutes. You’ll score yourself across 5 dimensions and see which one is driving it. Use it before you decide whether six weeks of structured work is the right next step. Free, no credit card, delivered instantly.

Week 3 — Values and what got lost

Burnout almost always involves a disconnect between what you’re spending your energy on and what actually matters to you. Cynicism is often that gap wearing a harder face.

Week 3 is values clarification — not a mood board, a working list. Then the SMART-V goal framework: goals that are specific and time-bound, and also values-aligned. You can hit every target at work and still be depleted if none of them belong to you.

This is the week that answers “what got buried.” You cannot rebuild a life you haven’t named.

Week 4 — The physical foundation

Sleep, movement, nutrition, nervous system regulation. Foundation, not optional.

This is the week people want to skip because it sounds like generic wellness. It isn’t. You cannot do values work and belief work on a nervous system that has been running hot for months. The physical layer is the substrate. Without it, Weeks 5 and 6 are notes you won’t keep.

We put this in the middle of the program on purpose. First you know what you’re dealing with. Then you stop asking the cognitive work to carry a load it cannot carry. Week 4 is a rebuild of the layer rest was supposed to touch — done on purpose, not hoped for over a long weekend.

Week 5 — The emotional and mental landscape

Burnout produces characteristic thinking patterns. All-or-nothing. The sense that your value is contingent on your output. Catastrophising about what happens if you slow down. Those patterns persist after the exhaustion lifts, and they actively interfere with recovery.

Week 5 works with that landscape. The ABC model for limiting beliefs: the activating event, the belief you attached to it, the consequence that followed. Coaching tools, not therapy. You are not diagnosing yourself. You are interrupting the loop that kept the cycle running after the original pressure should have been enough.

I could rest for a weekend and still talk myself back into the same overwork by Tuesday. The exhaustion would dip. The story wouldn’t. This is the week that goes after the story.

Week 6 — Building forward

The last week is not a victory lap. It is the part that keeps this from being another pause.

The GROW framework for a recovery plan: where you’re going, where you actually are, what your options are, and what you will do. Accountability architecture — because a plan without a structure for following it is a wish. And a personal early warning system so you can catch the next dip instead of waking up empty again. Not a generic red-flag poster. Yours: the specific signals that showed up before this round got loud.

Recovery is not returning to the person who burned out and hoping they behave differently. It is building forward on purpose.

What you actually get

Burnout Reset is a 42-page PDF. Six weeks, self-guided. Instant download. Print-friendly for US Letter and A4. Works in GoodNotes and Notability if you prefer digital. Lifetime access — download it again if you need it later.

CA$49.

We priced it that way because the alternative we kept running into was a $400/hour coach or a $9 worksheet dump with no arc. This is the middle: the same sequence, without the session fee.

You do not need a workbook in the abstract. You need a sequence you can follow when your own sequencing is impaired. That is the only reason this exists as a file.

Start with a picture, or start with the work

If you want the dimensional picture first, take the free Burnout Audit. Three minutes. Five dimensions. A clearer starting point than “I’m exhausted.”

If you already know rest wasn’t enough and you want the structure, Burnout Reset is the 6-week program. The arc above is the real one. We built it because we needed it, and we kept what held up when we used it on ourselves.
